Choosing Dry-Fog Liquid: Neutralizers, Fragrances and Antibacterial Solutions

Dry-fog liquids come in four types — neutralizer, fragrance, antibacterial and 2-in-1. Here is how to choose, and why cheap liquid costs more in the end.

The dry-fog liquid you choose decides the result more than the machine does. Quality liquids are glycol- or glycerin-based, bind odors at the source, leave no streaks or residue and are safe for health; cheap ones smell harsh, mask poorly and can be unsafe. There are four main types — an odor neutralizer, a fragrance, an antibacterial / disinfectant solution and a 2-in-1.

What types of dry-fog liquid are there?

Type What it does When to use Scent
Odor neutralizer Binds and breaks down odor molecules at the source Smoke, pets, damp, mold smells Little to none
Fragrance / aroma Adds a long-lasting pleasant scent Finishing touch, retail freshening Strong, your choice
Antibacterial / disinfectant Destroys bacteria, fungi and mold Hygiene, A/C, after illness Mild
2-in-1 (neutralizer + fragrance) Removes odor and leaves a scent Quick everyday treatments Moderate

Neutralizer or fragrance — what is the difference?

A neutralizer removes the smell: its molecules bind and break down the odor at the source, and it has little scent of its own. A fragrance does the opposite — it adds a pleasant, long-lasting scent on top. The best practice is to neutralize first, then add fragrance if you want a signature scent. A fragrance alone only masks the problem.

What if I need disinfection too?

Choose an antibacterial / disinfectant solution. It destroys bacteria, fungi and mold throughout the cabin, including in the air-conditioning evaporator where the "A/C smell" begins. This is the right choice for hygiene-focused services, fleets and post-illness treatments.

Why not just buy the cheapest liquid?

Cutting corners on consumables is the most common mistake:

  • cheap liquids often carry a harsh chemical smell of their own
  • they neutralize odors poorly, so the problem returns
  • some leave a sticky residue or film
  • unknown formulations can pose a health risk

The liquid is a small share of the cost per treatment, so there is little to gain and a lot to lose.

Is the liquid safe and certified?

Quality dry-fog liquids leave no streaks, residue or toxic traces and dissipate cleanly, giving a long-lasting effect. In the EU, disinfectant liquids are biocidal products under the Biocidal Products Regulation (BPR, EU 528/2012, Product-Type 2) — always prefer certified, Article 95-compliant products over grey-market alternatives.

How much liquid does one treatment use?

Very little — typically only tens of millilitres per car. A single canister covers many treatments, which keeps the cost per treatment low and the margin high for self-service operators.

CarFog OÜ supplies certified 2-in-1 liquids (neutralizers and fragrances) across Estonia, matched to your machine — so you get the right result every time. You can browse the available scents in our catalog.
